Clean and Natural Personal Care as part of a Wellness Regimen

Today, there are so many different categories for personal care and beauty products on the market. Although I enjoyed experimenting with the in-store testers and the latest beauty trends, I developed adult onset allergies in the form of contact dermatitis.

After talking to physicians and reading about the beauty industry through fashion blogs, I realized many companies dabble with new formulas and sell products that include complex synthetic chemicals, heavy fragrances, and other preservatives. I also discovered there were many consumers who also experienced allergic reactions when using products laden with harsh chemicals.

Instead of feeling ashamed of my skin conditions, I rather share openly about how I resolved some of my dermatological issues and potentially help others who experience similar allergies. One of the fastest growing sections includes the clean beauty and personal care section. Since I have sensitive skin, I opt for natural clean beauty products without the additives, preservatives, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, or harsh chemicals. My favorite clean product lines include: Alaffia, Alba Botanica, Burt’s Bees, and the Seaweed Bath Co.

When I moved from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara, I noticed my skin would dry out with the increased exposure to the marine layer and ocean breeze. I love the richness of shea butter and I found Alaffia EveryDay Shea Body Lotion at the personal care aisle in the Isla Vista Food Co-op.

The IV Food Coop carries a wide range of natural beauty products, cleaning supplies, and biodegradable paper goods.

Now that I live in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, many different retailers and markets that carry these brand name products.

Natural cleaning products are essential at my household since I want to use products that are safe for my family, my pets, and myself. When it comes to cleaning and laundry, I use products from Seventh Generation. I also use the Better Life Natural All-Purpose cleaner (safe around kids and pets, with clary sage and citrus).

Although some of these products may seem pricey compared to other big box brand name products, natural and clean products also raise a social consciousness that legacy brands may not always publicize. When I shop locally and support small businesses, I know I’m helping friends, neighbors, and fellow community members rather than a CEO I haven’t met. When I make the decision to buy clean personal care, I know I support emerging companies that represent values and practices I hold dear such as cruelty-free processing and fair trade.
