The Isla Vista Food Co-op is a community owned market that is open to the public. This community gem carries so many locally sourced produce and eco-friendly products at affordable prices. As an owner, I know I’m contributing to an organization that promotes, farm-to-table, organic/fair trade products, sustainability, and educational programming.

The IV Food Co-op carries dried goods and allows shoppers to buy in bulk. I have friends who would buy certain spices (cinnamon, clove, 5 spice, cumin, himalayan sea salt, etc) and they claimed the co-op carried the widest variety, highest quality, and best value for bulk spices and herbs. Whenever I arrive at the co-op, I wander towards the back of the store and survey the specialty treats aisle.
Coffee and tea had been a staple in my day-to-day as a Ph.D. student, so I am always browsing unique roasts and teas. So far, my favorite coffee find was the dark roast from Just Coffee Co-op called Electric Monkey Espresso. These 100% fair trade and certified organic whole beans evoke notes of cocoa, dark chocolate, and even a little tang.

This hidden foodie stop became my go-to destination for plant-based/ non-dairy items, and pre-made vegetarian/vegan deli items. Every grocery trip was an epicurean adventure.
Graduate school was a stressful, challenging season in my life, but also extremely meaningful in which I got to know myself better than ever. Managing adult onset allergies also shaped my food choices. In order to maintain my productivity and feel healthy, I tend to maintain a 80% plant based diet. During the work week I try to stick to a diet with fresh whole foods, and some complex carbs. I also try to steer away from highly processed products, meat, and dairy.
Through a simple shopping trip, I know I found ways to nourish my body, my soul, and support those who benefit from this wonderful organization.
